Understanding 2‑Post Hoist Types & Why It Matters

A 2‑post hoist is one of the most versatile workshop lifts — ideal for general servicing, under‑vehicle access, tyre/wheel removal, engine work, and more. They come in different configurations:

• Symmetrical vs Asymmetrical:

  • Symmetrical lifts centre the vehicle between posts (good for general service).

  • Asymmetrical lifts position vehicles slightly forward for easier door access and better ergonomics.

• Clear‑floor vs Base‑plate:

  • Clear‑floor models have no floor frames, giving unrestricted floor access.

  • Base‑plate models add stability where concrete strength is a concern.

• Power Unit & Controls:

  • Choose between single phase (240 V) for home or small workshops and three phase for commercial garages.

When choosing a hoist, ask yourself these essential questions:

Lifting Capacity

• What’s the weight of the vehicles you’ll service?

• Common capacities range from ~4 tonne to 6 tonne on Logicar’s range.

• Bigger SUVs and dual‑cabs often require 4.5 t+ capacity.

Arm Design & Reach

• Do the arms extend far enough for long wheel‑base vehicles?

• Are front and rear arms adjustable or telescopic? (helps with flexibility for different vehicles)

Installation & Space

• What ceiling height is needed?

• How much drive‑through space between posts will you require?

• Is your concrete slab thick and strong enough for anchor bolts?

Safety & Standards

      Look for Australian / WHS compliant hoists.

• Safety locks, automatic restraints, and reliable equalisation systems are must‑haves.
